Heart and Mind Management

31-08-2026

Beeing a leader or a coworker is a constant cooperation / balancing act with others

In my experience one of the more important areas to address is the balance between feeling and logic,

in my vocabulary Heart and Mind

Heart and Mind Management provides Assessment, Coaching, Training, Workshops supporting in management and organisation effectiveness

We updated the homepage on 31-08-2026

I have recorded spoken presentations on the following subjects and launched them, and also updated the homepage

Waterfall Project

Waterfall Project

The basic thinking around a Waterfall project is to have a checklist of things needed to be handled before each gate (step in the process).

The steering committee controls that the checklist is performed and approves deviations to the checklist if needed.

Development is performed simultaneously to all functions and parts of the project.

The activities in the checklist can be very detailed meaning that this way of steering is quite detailed.

A project is a temporary effort undertaken to create a unique product, service or result

A lot of changes are performed in projects

You assign one cross-functional project group to steer and another to perform the project

A common routine to follow means that everyone in the company can have a common picture of the progress of a project.
There are a couple of advantages that I like to mention
-  Everyone in the company knows how far the project has progressed (What checkpoint
is passed and when the next one will be passed)
-  Updates from previous projects can be used in all new projects

Two different models are presented
-  Waterfall Project the Dyne way
-  Design Process (Waterfall project) by  Rikke Friis Dam and Teo Yu Siang

Agree and decide on chosen model

Make it detailed enough, make it easy to follow

To pass a predefined checkpoint (decision between the Project and the Steering group/Sponsor)
-  Everything is fulfilled up to the checkpoint – if not fulfilled, there needs to be a
timeplan on how the Project can catch up (does the project need extra resources or
help in any other way from the steering group?
-  What needs to be fullfilled up to the next checkpoint? (based on the process
description and the delayed activities from this checkpoint).

The Waterfall model is an ideal model so when you run a project according to this model, it will never work without exceptions and deviations.

Running a project is activly dealing with risks (the risk that a solution does not work as intended).

So the challenges for the project leader is to manage the risks/deviations and keep them under control

Service and Faulttree

Service Fault tree

1. Discuss with the custemar
customer, patient, user or driver  -  do they experience problems that they can describe?
2. Perform preventive maintinence
based on age, time since last service, usage time or  driving distance
3.Perform an inspection
according to a standard rutine (predesigned) to discover faults (Inspection of the current state)
4.Complimentary tests
are performed (e.g patient: temperature, blood pressure and x-ray test or in computer aided equipment: faultcode readings). Tests easy to perform and worth the money.
5. Fault tree analysis
Perform an analysis and try to find the problem (Fault tree analysis) using input from the patient/customer and your inspection.

A diagnosis is put in place (patient).
E.g. patient:
Based on this diagnosis medication and other measures are decided.
When having tested the medicine for a couple of weeks, the patient revisits and the diagnosis and the effect of the medicine are evaluated.

A diagnosis is put in place (Computer steered equipment.)
E.g.:   Service / Fault tree on Computer steered equipment
Having a computer involved allows you to gather information of how the product works. Often you can obtain fault codes that can give a hint of where to start to search for the problem (allows you to jump into the fault tree)

Iterative development

Iterative development

Functionality or components are gradually developed through several loops/cycles. Each loop or cycle results in a more complete version of the product, gradually converging to the final product. This approach emphasises adaptability and the early delivery of a working product.

A project is a temporary effort undertaken to create a unique product, service or result
A lot of changes are performed in projects

A project leader and a  steering group is appointed

The steering group is cross functional and there to support the project (they are often managers with line responsibilities but in the steering group they are there for the project)

This method is a topdown method

The project leader prioritises what are the most important requirements, functionalities or components to develop first, concentrate on them and let the rest be.

Next loops:
-  Evaluate the working product, service, education, production… and debug (the total
functionality of the to be product is not there yet but it works)
-  Start a new iteration (development loop), by the project leader prioritising most
important requirements, functionality or parts to develop
This way of development is used a lot in the software industry.

After a number of iterations, the product to be has the full functionality and meets all the requirements and you can start to produce.

Diversified Development

Diversified Development

Instead of running projects, the trend in the industry is to use the Diversified
Development, developing the product, process or production process are done
one change at the time.  (seen in SPACEX and in Tesla)
-  If the evaluation is done efficiently you can start producing after one loop, of
course depending on your product and your production.
-  This way to work everyday where no project leader is appointed, is a very
efficient and fast way of working.

Product Owner
Working with Diversified Development you most of the time have a Product Owner (PO)
  -  The Product Owner has the responsibility to maintain and revise the Product
       backlog.
  -  The product backlog can be seen as a wish list/an order to the organisation.

   -  The function with the highest profitability is highest on the list indicating what
development will start with that function.
    -  The PO needs to be a people’s person, someone being good at handling
many types of persons everything from the developer, customers to the
        finance persons.
    -  Their responsibility is somewhere between Finance and Solution
        management.
    -  The profitability calculation takes into account:
              -  Profit that the new product will bring
              -  Cost to develop the new product
              -  Available resources to develop the new product
              -  Competitor analyses
    -  POs interest is when and what something is done - not How
    -  The PO has total responsibility for the product, its development, its life cycle
       and its value creating.
    -  To be able to take this responsibility the PO needs to have mandate to take
all the decisions regarding the product.
     -  Has the money to invest in the product development of new functions,
production facilities, equipment or something else  needed for the product.
     -  Meaning that the developer comes to the Product Owner and asks for
        money when needed.
      -  This means that money is not spent and tied up for the whole project but for
         different specific tasks when needed.

Interfaces
      -  Defining interfaces allows you to run development in different parts,
         functions or organisations in parallel.
      -  Different groups or persons run different developments autonomously and
in parallel (make sure that the fully crossfunctional knowledge is used).

Team meetings
      -  Often standup meetings or short sitting meetings covering:
                -  What worked well this week
                -  What didn’t work well
                -  The coworker tells what he or she will work with next week (look at
                    the product backlog)
                 -  Are there any obstacles or do you need help with something

Diversified Development
  -  Improvements of prioritised requirements, functionalities or parts changing
one thing at the time but more things in parallel
  -  Change initatives are performed all the time and in parallel (everyday work)
  -  The product delivered to customer changes continuously and is improved all
      the time.
  -  Advantages
        -  Speed
        -  Capital is not tied up longer then necessary
         -  Less overhead
         -  Coworker are trusted and feel empowered
  -  Challenges
          -  Evaluate with high speed and accuracy (digital)
          -  Increased responsibility for coworkers (engagement)
          -  Rapid resource allocation (on demand and need of immediate allocation)
          -  How shall quality be worked into the Diversified development and how
do you take care of experience from earlier performed development
